Authorizing City Council's Committee on Public Property and Public Works to hold public hearings on the operations, contracts, vending, and parking at the Philadelphia International Airport.
Body
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia International Airport is the foremost economic development engine in our region, directly responsible for fifteen thousand jobs, and indirectly responsible for over $6 billion in commerce in our region each year; and
 
WHEREAS, The Airport has evolved into one of the best in the country, with almost 25 million passengers last year, almost 50 percent more than a decade ago, currently ranking twentieth in the nation in terms of passenger volume; and
 
WHEREAS, The Airport has also greatly expanded, spending $584 million over the last decade on construction projects to increase its size and available gates; and
 
WHEREAS, There is cause for serious concern that recently the Airport has not been awarding its service, construction, and vending contracts at the best price to the lowest bidder or most capable vendor; and
 
WHEREAS, In order for the Airport to continue to improve the quality of its service to our region's businesses and residents, it is of the utmost importance that the Airport's operations be run as efficiently and effectively as possible; and
 
WHEREAS, It is critical that this major regional asset not be used for any other purposes than to provide the most efficient air and ground services while continuing its critical contribution to our region's economy; now therefore
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That authority be given to the Committee on Public Property and Public Works to hold public hearings on the operations, contracts, vending, and parking at the Philadelphia International Airport.
