Recognizing May 4, 2001 as School Crossing Guard Day in the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, School crossing guards were first utilized in Philadelphia in May, 1952. A pilot program was started in the 17th Police District, at 20th and Federal Streets, consisting of 29 women. The program expanded citywide in September, 1952 to 500 women. Presently, there are 1000 guards assigned to school crossings citywide; and
WHEREAS, Children, as they walk to and from school, are constantly crossing streets, often during the rush hour, thereby, through no choice of their own, endangering themselves; and
WHEREAS, To ensure the safety of these children, the position of School Crossing Guard was established, and now there is a formalized School Crossing Guard Unit under the supervision of the Police Department; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia School Crossing Guards are the eyes and ears of the City, and they are entrusted with protecting and ensuring the safety of our children as they assist school children during morning and afternoon hours, and at lunchtime, helping to escort students safely across streets at hundreds of locations; and
WHEREAS, During School Crossing Guard Day, the city of Philadelphia commends these dedicated public servants and applauds their careful attention to the safety of our children; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes May 4, 2001 as School Crossing Guard Day in the City of Philadelphia.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Ms. Betty McDonald, President of Local 1956, Philadelphia School Crossing Guards, as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
