WHEREAS, Reverend Ellis I. Washington is the pastor of Saint Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church; and
 
      WHEREAS, Saint Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the most influential and the largest African Methodist Episcopal church in Philadelphia; and
 
WHEREAS, Reverend Ellis I. Washington by his selfless efforts demonstrates a true commitment to the betterment of the total community; and
 
WHEREAS, The Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity for 27 years has been one of the City's most powerful political forces; and
 
WHEREAS, Reverend Ellis I. Washington's history, education, training, commitment and dedication to the betterment of the total community, his prophetic qualities as steward of Saint Matthew African Methodist Episcopal Church will enhance the continued success of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity; and
 
WHEREAS, The Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity on January 27, 2008 will install Reverend Ellis I. Washington as its next President to lead this august organization; now therefore
 
      RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council honors and commends Reverend Ellis I. Washington on his election as the President of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity.  
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Ellis I. Washington as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this Legislative Body.
