Recognizing and celebrating The Philadelphia Tribune on the occasion of its 125th Anniversary serving the African-American community in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
Body
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Tribune was founded in 1884 by Christopher J. Perry, when the city had only 108,000 African Americans, few of them literate; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Tribune is the nation's oldest continually printed newspaper and the Greater Philadelphia Area's largest newspaper serving the African-American community; and
WHEREAS, Robert W. Bogle, the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Philadelphia Tribune has successfully led the newspaper since attaining his position in July of 1989; and  
 
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Robert W. Bogle, the National Newspaper Publisher's Association, a trade association which represents 205 African-American owned newspapers, has recognized The Philadelphia Tribune as the “Best Newspaper in America” seven out of the last eleven years; and
 
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Tribune has celebrated the accomplishments of African-American leaders in the Philadelphia area by honoring the top 100 influential African-Americans of Philadelphia each year; and
 
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Tribune has consistently advocated on behalf of African-American rights, African-American causes, and recognition for African-American issues in the city of Philadelphia in an effort to further the stance of African-Americans in this great city, now therefore
 
RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and celebrates The Philadelphia Tribune on the occasion of its 125th Anniversary serving the African-American community in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution to be presented to Robert W. Bogle, publisher of The Philadelphia Tribune as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
