Honoring and Celebrating the life, legacy and contributions of George Schwartz, former City Council Member and President.

WHEREAS, George Schwartz passed away on Friday, March 26, leaving a political legacy behind that will forever be shared by all those fortunate enough to have experienced his tremendous power and influence; and
 
      WHEREAS, George Schwartz was born in New York in 1915. He relocated at an early age to Philadelphia where he attended West Philadelphia High School. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Temple University in 1936 and graduated from Temple University's Law School in 1940; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Schwartz had a thriving political career which began as a committeeman for the 34th Ward in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. He went on to serve in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in the 1950s, followed by a lengthy tenure in the City Council, eight years of which were served as president; and
WHEREAS, Through his mentorship and political prowess, George Schwartz was responsible for launching the careers of some of Philadelphia's most prominent politicians. During his tenure, he was known for his distinguished figure with tailored suits and neatly styled, graying hair which earned him the nickname “the Silver Fox”; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Schwartz was a dedicated public servant who had strong constituent services, and believed in helping people, regardless of color, creed or gender; now therefore
 
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and celebrates the life, legacy and contributions of George X. Schwartz, former City Council Member and President.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of George X. Schwartz as evidence of the sincere admiration of this legislative body.
