Authorizing the Council Committee on Streets and Services to hold a hearing to investigate traffic safety and the needs for additional traffic controls on the North 5th Street Corridor.
Body
            WHEREAS, North 5th Street is dynamic urban corridor with a tremendous variety of uses; and
 
WHEREAS, Retail businesses, residential houses and recreational and institutional services exist side by side; and
 
WHEREAS, North 5th Street is an important traffic arterial, but frequently has cars and trucks traveling at a speed that endangers the dense pedestrian activity on this Street; and
 
WHEREAS, The lack of a traffic control at the North end of the Ramonita Rivera Recreation center at 5th Street and Westmoreland Street means that children crossing the street and frequently exposed to the hazards of speeding cars; and
 
WHEREAS, Additional residential developments such as the HACE Lawrence court project will only bring more pedestrian and car traffic to this area and increase the need for traffic controls; now therefore be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the Committee on Streets and Services is authorized to hold hearings explore the traffic dangers present on North 5th Street and the need for additional traffic controls to protect the pedestrians who utilize North 5th Streets businesses and recreation centers.
