Recognizing and Celebrating Al Johnson, former Local 488 President, for his years of commitment and service to the membership of District Council 33 on the occasion of his 81st Birthday.

WHEREAS, On March 5, 1930, Al Johnson was born and raised in Columbia, Carolina. Growing up in a working class family, Mr. Johnson, at an early age became a champion of the working classes, his community and organized labor; and

WHEREAS, In the 1950's Al Johnson move to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he became a prominent union advocate for District Council 33 workers. During his tenure with the City of Philadelphia, Al Johnson served as President of Local 488 of District Council 33 for over ten years, overseeing Department of Health workers affiliated with Philadelphia General Hospital and all Health System workers in Philadelphia. After serving as Local 488 President, Mr. Johnson went on to become Secretary Treasurer for District Council 33 for nearly ten years until his retirement in 1988; and

WHEREAS, Today, Mr. Johnson continues to remain active in the Union after 54 years, maintaining his dedication to serving the workers of Philadelphia. Working as a consultant for District Council 33, Mr. Johnson is often in City Council Chambers reviewing and advocating for legislation and public policies that have an impact on his union brothers and sisters. His commitment to improving their lives through his advocacy for their rights will forever be his legacy; and

WHEREAS, Council is pleased to honor Al Johnson on his 81st birthday and will continue to honor him for the work he has done for our labor force; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the Council of the City of Philadelphia enthusiastically joins family and friends in the celebration of Al Johnson on the occasion of his 81st Birthday.
