Recognizing and Honoring the Nation of Paraguay on the 200th Anniversary of it's Independence from Spain.

      WHEREAS, Paraguay has a proud and diverse Gaurani Amerindian culture, dating back many thousands of years; and
 
WHEREAS, The people of Paraguay valiantly ended over 200 years of colonial rule on May 15th , 1811; and
 
      WHEREAS, Paraguay continued its independence struggle for many more years, defending it's independence from hostile neighbor states; and
      WHEREAS, The leaders of Paraguay's independence movement, such as Fulgencio Yegros, and Fernando De La Mora, are honored in Paraguay's “Pantheon of Heroes”; and
 
      WHEREAS, This important monument, in the capital city of Asuncion, remains a popular gathering place for celebrations and expressions of national pride; and
 
      WHEREAS, Paraguay is now home to over 6.3 Million people, and this dynamic nation is experiencing some of the fastest economic growth in South America; and
 
WHEREAS, Paraguay has developed a rich literary and musical history, producing many notable artists and writers including Hugo Rodriguez Alcala, and Augustin Barrios Mangore; and
 
WHEREAS, The main United States event to celebrate the anniversary of Paraguay's independence will be held in Philadelphia, with a Gala event at the Kimmel Center on May 14th; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That The Council of the City of Phialdelphia hereby honors and recognizes the nation of Paraguay of 200 years of independence and for it's tremendous contributions to South American culture and identity.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Paraguay Bicentennial Committee and it's President, Wilfrido Risso, as a expression of the sincere admiration and respect of this body.
