WHEREAS, Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP), a magnet secondary school within the School District of Philadelphia, began operation in September 1974 as an alternative program within the Stephen Girard School; and

WHEREAS, Girard Academic Music Program has a fine academic tradition with a concentration on the performing arts including Music Theory, Music Technology and Instrumental; and

WHEREAS, The cast majority of students who attend Girard Academic Music Program make adequate yearly progress; and

WHEREAS, Angelo Milicia has worked in the School District of Philadelphia for 17 years as a teacher and 24 years as a principal serving his last 16 years as Principal of Girard Academic Music Program; and

WHEREAS, In light of education funding cuts, Girard Academic Music Program's budget has been cut by 28% and will lose a thriving theater arts program and several advanced placement courses; and

WHEREAS, Girard Academic Music Program was scheduled to lose two music teachers until Angelo Milicia made the heart wrenching decision to retire early and allow the assistant principal and Founder of Girard Academic Music Program, Jack Carr, to serve as the principal without an assistant principal to save the jobs of two music teachers; and

WHEREAS, Girard Academic Music Program and the entire City of Philadelphia has benefited tremendously from the example set by Principal Milicia on the occasion of his unexpected retirement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and thank Principal Angelo Milicia on his decision to retire from the Girard Academic Music Program in order to save the positions of two music teachers from being laid off
