WHEREAS, Mothers In Charge, Inc. (Mothers In Charge), is a grassroots organization whose mission focuses on violence prevention through education and intervention for children, young adults, families and community organizations; and
WHEREAS, After the murder of her twenty-four-year-old son in 2003, Dorothy Johnson-Speight founded Mothers In Charge as a support organization for families to come together in the fight against gun violence; and
WHEREAS, Mothers In Charge is comprised of impassioned mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters committed to working to save lives; and
WHEREAS, Most of the members of Mothers In Charge have experienced the horror of having a son, daughter or loved one murdered; and
WHEREAS, Mothers In Charge works with elected officials on legislation to support safe neighborhoods and communities for children and families and collaborates with community and faith-based organizations; and
WHEREAS, The passion and drive exhibited by Mothers In Charge comes from within because each one of these brave women has somehow found the strength to attempt to turn a personal tragedy into a medium for change; and
WHEREAS, As Executive Director and Founder of Mothers In Charge, Ms. Johnson-Speight's work has led to national appearances and presentations throughout the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, Mothers In Charge has received many recognitions and awards for its work in the community including the Philadelphia Leadership Award Transformer of Grief, the NAACP Exemplary Citizens Award, and recognition from the Philadelphia 76ers; now therefore,
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor, recognize, and commend Mothers In Charge, Inc. for its leadership in providing community advocacy and support in the fight to end violent crime.
