WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to save homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals in Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, PAWS is the largest no-kill shelter in Philadelphia, and finds loving homes for thousands of animals each year. Additionally, the organization provides affordable basic veterinary services to pet owners and rescue organizations in an effort to reduce the homeless pet population; and

WHEREAS, More than 30,000 homeless, abandoned, and unwanted dogs and cats enter the City's animal-control shelter every year. Of those, approximately 40% never make it out. To lead Philadelphia toward becoming a no-kill city, PAWS has created comprehensive rescue and preventative measures including finding homes for at-risk animals, and providing low or no-cost veterinary services and spay/neuter surgery to pet owners; and

WHEREAS, PAWS has two centers based in Philadelphia. The PAWS Adoption Center, a boutique-style environment in Old City, showcases adoptable animals in an inviting setting. The PAWS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic, is located in the Grays Ferry section of the City; and

WHEREAS, PAWS is a privately funded organization. Through individual, corporate, media, and foundation support, PAWS effectively continues its mission. With help from a highly qualified staff, a large and active volunteer base, and widespread community support, the organization continues to be a leading animal advocacy resource in Philadelphia; now therefore, be it
