WHEREAS, A native of Ireland and adopted Philadelphian, Fergus "Fergie" Carey is a widely-loved publican, local hospitality icon and business owner, humble benefactor of the arts, and larger-than-life character that has made immeasurable contributions to the quality of life of many in Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, Carey, a Dubliner, had a childhood pen pal in Philadelphia and eventually moved here in 1987 at the urging of a close friend. He quickly became a fixture at local staples like McGlinchey's bar where his talent for remembering names, drink orders and making others feel important began to shine; and

WHEREAS, Not long after his arrival in Philadelphia, Carey began a life of contributing to the happiness of others. Despite all his success in running Fergie's Pub, Grace Tavern, Monk's Café, the Belgian Café, and Nodding Head Restaurant & Brewery, all of which he travels to by bike, Carey remains a humble, self-effacing, and generous human being; and

WHEREAS, Giving of his time, funds, beer and food, Fergie Carey has thoughtfully contributed to the rising spirit of arts and culture in Philadelphia in countless ways. From serving on the board of Brat Productions, to regularly offering up his businesses for free performance space to up-and-coming artists, Fergie Carey understands better than most that in order to flourish, the soul of our City must be nurtured, befriended, entertained, danced with, well-fed, and even offered a drink every once in a while; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby recognize and thank Fergus "Fergie" Carey and all Philadelphians like him, for a lifetime of contributions to Philadelphia's culture and for making it a far happier and more enjoyable place to live for so many.
