Recognizing the successful completion of the 113th U.S. Open golf championship at the Merion Golf Club, hosted by the United States Golf Association.

Body
WHEREAS, The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the second of the four major golf championships and is staged by the United States Golf Association (USGA). The USGA is the national association of golf courses, clubs and facilities and the governing body of golf for the United States and Mexico. The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895 in Newport, Rhode Island and is now played annually in mid-June at different golf courses; and

WHEREAS, The 113th U.S. Open was played from June 13 through June 16, 2013 at the Merion Golf Club in Admore, Pennsylvania. Established in 1896, the Merion Golf Club enjoys the distinction of hosting more USGA championships than any other club in America, and previously hosted the U.S. Open four times. The Club has two courses, the East and the West Course. The East Course has been consistently rated by Golf Digest among America's greatest golf courses, and it has been the site of several iconic moments in the golf's history; and

WHEREAS, Justin Peter Rose won this year's U.S. Open, which was the first major golf championship for the South African-born English professional golfer. Rose won the championship by two strokes over Phil Mickelson and Jason Day, becoming the first Englishman in 43 years to win the U.S. Open. The total purse for the championship was $8 million, of which Rose took home $1.44 million; and

WHEREAS, The Greater Philadelphia region hosted thousands of golf enthusiasts, which had significant economic benefits for area hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist destinations. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is also to be commended for its efficient transportation of visitors around the metropolitan area.
