Recognizing Saturday, September 28th 2013 as Philly Play! Day in the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, National Play Outside Day in the United States is the first Saturday of every month, while the 10th annual Worldwide Day of Play has been scheduled for September 21st, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Both of these events encourage children and their parents to turn off their television and go play outdoors. These events will inspire kids to be active with the hope that this will lead to developing a lifetime habit of physical activity; and

WHEREAS, In conjunction with these endeavors, Philly Play! is an initiative being launched by Councilman Bobby Henon to promote fun, accessible family fitness and wellness. The program will focus on compiling information on free and low cost physical activity resources and assisting City residents with utilizing these resources; and

WHEREAS, Philly Play! will communicate the importance of play as a preventative health measure to elementary aged children and their parents; and

WHEREAS, By participating in these initiatives and those other events which encourage children to become physically active, kids and their parents can also learn to make health and exercise a priority, while using their imagination and discovering the beauty of nature through playing outside; and

WHEREAS, The launch event for Philly Play! will be Fall Fest in the Northeast, an event scheduled for September 28th, 2013 which will combine traditional street fair activities with information on healthy family fitness and wellness options and will provide kids with various outlets to play and have fun; and

WHEREAS, Philly Play! will also encompass other initiatives which will encourage people to bike, hike and to better utilize our City's recreational resources by dispersing information to our residents in a way that fosters a sense of community ownership and broad accessibility; and
