WHEREAS, The Philadelphia region is home to more than 23,000 direct manufacturing jobs in fields which include aerospace, baking, brewing, energy, food processing, health care, packaging, printing, technology and many others areas; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia's manufacturing companies add to the vitality and prosperity of our community by providing above average wages, creating family sustainability.  Manufacturing makes a significant contribution to the local, state and national economy; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia and the region helps to support an estimated 17.2 million jobs in the United States—about one in six private-sector jobs. Nearly 12 million Americans (or 9 percent of the workforce) are employed directly in manufacturing; and
 
WHEREAS, The Mayor's Manufacturing Matters Task Force works to develop a strategy to promote and grow this important sector of the economy.  Manufacturers in the Philadelphia region and the nation are the most productive in the world, far surpassing the worker productivity of any other major manufacturing economy, leading to higher wages and living standards; and
 
WHEREAS, Friday, October 4, 2013 marks the 2nd anniversary of National Manufacturing Day in the United States of America.  Groups both locally and nationally will sponsor projects and programs designed to create greater awareness and consciousness of the manufacturing sector, including factory tours, networking events and educational presentations; and
 
WHEREAS, Manufacturing events to highlight the sector in the City and our five county region will culminate with National Manufacturing Day, with planned observances in hundreds of cities and towns around the nation; and
           
WHEREAS, We in Philadelphia, a world class city and the historical heart of the United States, have a great opportunity to focus the minds of our citizens on the resurgence of the manufacturing sector with the recognition and celebration of National Manufacturing Day; and
 
WHEREAS, Due to the ongoing work of the Mayor's Manufacturing Task Force, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the industry as a whole; now therefore
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize National Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 4, 2013.
 
RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of the Mayor's Manufacturing Matters Task Force in recognition of National Manufacturing Day on October 4th, 2013.
