WHEREAS, Odyssey of the Mind is an international creativity competition that synthesizes science, technology, engineering and the arts; and

WHEREAS, Odyssey of the Mind has been encouraging students around the world to "think outside the box" and work together as a team to solve challenging problems since 1978; and

WHEREAS, 5th graders Navid Verlin and Ariel Weinbaum and 7th graders Tillie Donover, Abby Leighton, Stephen Njiru, Sofia Powers and Rose Weinbaum constitute the Julia R. Masterman School's Odyssey of the Mind Team, which is coached by Chris Powers, a teacher at Samuel Powel Elementary School, and Brett Mandel; and

WHEREAS, The Julia R. Masterman School's Odyssey of the Mind Team placed first among 11 teams in the Southeast Pennsylvania Regional Tournament on March 15, 2014; and

WHEREAS, The Julia R. Masterman School's Odyssey of the Mind Team went on to place first among 12 teams at the Pennsylvania State Finals on April 12, 2014; and

WHEREAS, The Julia R. Masterman School's Odyssey of the Mind Team won these two competitions by designing, building and driving a hover scooter that transforms into a big-wheel vehicle that is propelled with ratchet wrenches, thereby allowing the vehicle to travel via two different sets of propulsions; and

WHEREAS, The Julia R. Masterman School's Odyssey of the Mind Team will compete in the 2014 World Finals at Iowa State University from May 28th through May 31st against thousands of teams from across the United States, 25 nations and six continents; and

WHEREAS, The Julia R. Masterman School's Odyssey of the Mind Team exemplifies hard work and creativity and their numerous applications to learning, problem-solving, technological advancement and commerce; now, therefore, be it
