WHEREAS, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout was a woman of many firsts. When elected to Philadelphia's Municipal Court in 1959, she was the first African-American woman in America to be elected to a U.S. Court; and

WHEREAS, In 1969, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout became the first African-American woman to be elected to the Court of Common Pleas; and

WHEREAS, In 1988, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court becoming the first African-American woman in the nation to serve on a State Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout was known as a tireless and relentless public servant who believed in the value of a good education and adherence to the law of the land; and

WHEREAS, During the 1960s, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout gained national recognition for her zealous and vigorous fight against crime and all aspects of juvenile delinquency; and

WHEREAS, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout is the recipient of approximately fifty awards, including "Outstanding Woman Lawyer of the Year" from the National Association of Women Lawyers, "The Good Citizen Award" from the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and "Justice of the Year" from the National Association of Women Judges; and

WHEREAS, Justice Juanita Kidd Stout was a mentor for younger attorneys and an example for all lawyers, prompting The Philadelphia Inquirer to state: "Education, work, honesty, morality discipline - these admirable qualities embodied the life and work of Justice Stout"; and

WHEREAS, In honor of her many accomplishments and dedication to the law, the Criminal Justice Center located at 1301 Filbert Street is now known as "The Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Center for Criminal Justice"; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby recognize June 19th, 2014 as Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Day in Philadelphia.
