Honoring the rich life and loving memory of Sergeant Daryl Giles, Sr. who served this City with honor and distinction as a Philadelphia School Police Officer for 19 years and earned a special place in the heart of the school community.

WHEREAS, Sergeant Giles was born in Philadelphia to Virgina Riess and Spencer Giles. He attended C.W. Henry Elementary School graduated from Dobbins A.V.T. High School, and also received formal training from the Philadelphia Printing School; and,
WHEREAS, Sergeant Giles was a talented boxer who at 17 years old became a Golden Gloves Champion; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Giles worked for the Tribune Newspaper as a printer before deciding to pursue careers in the military and public safety security. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve in 1986, serving his country for twenty years and achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Giles was a dedicated public servant who was committed to preserving public safety and performing his duties in an exemplary manner. He was known widely as a driven, goal oriented, kind, funny, no-nonsense man who loved to socialize and worked hard to provide for his family; and
WHEREAS, The students and school faculty of George Washington High School in Northeast Philadelphia, whom he served and protected in his capacity as a Philadelphia School District Police Officer for 19 years, affectionately nicknamed him "Sarge," and remember him as a respected, popular and altruistic public servant; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Giles died in the line of duty, suffering a fatal heart attack shortly after breaking up a fight at George Washington High School. He is survived by his mother, Virgina Reiss, his daughter, Danae Holman and his significant other, Deirdre Mickens. He was predeceased by his son, Daryl Giles Jr.; now, therefore, be it
