WHEREAS, Nelson Williams, Sr. was an outstanding community leader and beloved businessman in the Wynnefield Community; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Williams was born on December 25, 1938 in North Carolina and relocated to Philadelphia at an early age. He was a product of the Philadelphia School System and served his country in the United States Navy; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Williams was a pillar in the community. He played a key role in conflict resolution as a peace keeper during a very turbulent period for neighborhood youth. "Mr. Nelson," as he was affectionately called, inserted himself into the life of the neighborhood through both his firm commitment to its safety and growth, and as a source of employment for at-risk youth; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Williams was the patriarch of his family. He established a family owned store, Wynnebrook Pharmacy, on North 54th Street where all of his immediate family members were given the opportunity to hone their management skills and contribute to the success of the business in an era that witnessed a failure rate of more than half of all African American businesses; however, this business continued to thrive after his death; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Williams' commitment and contributions to the City of Philadelphia are indelibly etched in the hearts and minds of residents throughout the Wynnefield Community; and

WHEREAS, The residents of the community wish to honor the memory of Nelson Williams with a fitting tribute; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the memory and dedicated service of Nelson Williams, Sr., is honored and the unit block of 5400 West Berks Street, between North 54th Street and North 56th Street in the W...
