Recognizing and congratulating the Philadelphia Coalition of Labor Union Women on their 40th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, Regarded as one of the most active, community-oriented union-affiliated organizations in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) celebrates their 40th Anniversary; and
 
WHEREAS, Chartered on March 14, 1975, Philadelphia CLUW is one of the oldest chapters in the country and therefore, one of the longest functioning; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has served as the premier organization in recruiting women leaders and membership from all sectors of the labor movement and from all backgrounds; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has built strong alliances with local and national women's organizations to collaborate on centering (?) women's rights, access to quality healthcare and economic justice; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has focused their efforts on a variety of campaigns including but not limited to raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing that birth control be covered by insurance companies and advocating for increased public school funding; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has commemorated Labor Day, Equal Pay Day, Workers' Memorial Day and a number of other celebrations to raise awareness about issues that are important to them, their membership and their community; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has supported City Council legislation through coalition building on certain initiatives, including the City Council Paid Sick Days Ordinance; and
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has advocated for increased women's leadership, civic engagement, and political involvement in local government and local and national boards; and  
 
WHEREAS, Philadelphia CLUW has invested in and cultivated their young members, many of whom now serve as Officers of their unions and delegates to the CLUW National Executive Board; and
 
WHEREAS, A leader in supporting local and national organizing efforts in Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, Philadelphia CLUW prides itself on serving its membership by building lasting partnerships and coalitions, training new and existing leaders, and advancing the values and goals of  the movement to empower women, their families, and future generations; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby recognize and congratulate the Philadelphia Coalition of Labor Union Women on their 40th Anniversary.
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, tThat an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Philadelphia CLUW as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
