WHEREAS, There are over 5,000,000 Muslims living in the United States; and
 
WHEREAS, There are over 200,000 Muslims in the Greater Philadelphia Area; and
 
WHEREAS, June is recognized as the holy month of Ramadan, a time of peace and brotherhood; and
 
WHEREAS, Ramadan commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran; and
 
WHEREAS, Ramadan encourages the Muslim community to develop compassion and charity towards all persons
 
WHEREAS, Ramadan is celebrated by fasting, prayer, and meditation by the more than 1,000,000,000 Muslims throughout the world; and
 
WHEREAS, The purpose of Ramadan is to conduct individual introspection and reflection on one's personal spiritual growth and evolution through self evaluation;  therefore be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, that we recognize our Muslim Community and acknowledge June as the holy month of Ramadan, 1436 A.H.; and
 
FURTHER RESOLVED, That we honor and celebrate our rich cultural diversity in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection; and
 
RESOLVED FURTHER, That we extend to all those who are observing the holiest of times the respect and admiration of this legislative body.
