Recognizing and honoring the legacy of Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III, who served as an Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, a Major in the Delaware Army National Guard and the Attorney General of Delaware.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III was born on February 3, 1969 in Wilmington, Delaware; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Biden was active in his fraternity while an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania; and

 

WHEREAS, the Honorable Beau Biden later received his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University in 1994, and afterwards he was a law clerk for the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire; and

 

WHEREAS, From 1995 to 2004, he worked in Philadelphia as a Counsel to the Office of Policy Developments at the Department of Justice where he specialized in gun control, women’s rights laws, and child protection laws, and as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2003, Mr. Biden became a member of the Delaware Army National Guard and was a Major in the Judge Advocate General Corps in the 261st Signal Brigade in Smyrna, Delaware; and

 

WHEREAS, He served as Attorney General of Delaware from 2007 to 2015, where he championed stricter punishments and registration requirements for sex offenders; and

 

WHEREAS, As The Honorable Beau Biden served as Attorney General, his National Guard unit was deployed to Iraq in 2008, and he returned from Iraq after a year once his active duty was completed; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Biden was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit for his military contributions; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Biden has dedicated his life to serving not only the Philadelphia region, but the nation as well, and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Beau Biden passed away on May 30, 2015 at the age of 46; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and honors the legacy and life of Beau Biden.

 

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Beau Biden further evidencing the sincere respect and admiration of the City Council of Philadelphia.
