Recognizing and commemorating August 21, 2015 as National Senior Citizens Day in Philadelphia.
 
Body
WHEREAS, The Congress, by House Joint Resolution 138, has designated August 21, 1988 as National Senior Citizens Day and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this event; and
 
WHEREAS,  National Senior Citizens Day is observed annually on August 21st to honor senior citizens in the United States who made positive contributions in their communities and to bring awareness of social, health and economic issues that affect senior citizens; and
 
WHEREAS, More that 4.5 million senior citizens are serving as volunteers in the Unites States. In addition, according to the Corporation for National and Community Services (CNCS), one in three volunteers is a senior age 55 or older.  More than 20 million senior volunteers gave nearly 3 billion hours of service, at a value of $67 billion; and
 
WHEREAS, The population of senior citizens is growing rapidly. It is estimated that by 2030, 1 in every 4 individuals will be over age 65.  This population growth demands more attention to the complex issues such as housing, healthcare and food security facing senior citizens in local communities across the United States; and   
 
WHEREAS, Senior citizens are an invaluable segment of the City of Philadelphia and the Council of the City of Philadelphia call upon all citizens of Philadelphia to observe National Senior Citizens Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities; now, therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and commemorates August 26, 2015 as National Senior Citizens Day in Philadelphia.
 
RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, and AARP Pennsylvania, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
