Title

Honoring and recognizing the Central High School Robotics Team, the RoboLancers, on qualifying for the FIRST World Championship by virtue of their second consecutive and fourth ever Chairman’s Award, the highest honor in FIRST robotics.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The RoboLancers have qualified for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) World Championship for the third time in its 17 year history.  Since its inception, the RoboLancers have grown from a small team of only five members to its current standing of 103 students; and

 

WHEREAS, These talented individuals reflect the diversity of our City, racially and socio-economically.  The members are girls and boys, many of whom are bi-lingual; and

 

WHEREAS, The RoboLancers have emerged as a leader among Philadelphia’s robotics teams, providing access to practice and build space, financial assistance and mentorship to other teams across the City.  They serve approximately 55 teams each year by hosting City-wide robotics competitions and workshops, during which teams from different schools come together to share tools and materials and learn from each other. Their Philly Robotics Expo, now in its seventh year, brings in hundreds of school children each spring for a full day of workshops, activities, and demonstrations; and

 

WHEREAS, The RoboLancers support STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and promote STEM-based future careers, including advanced manufacturing, engineering and building trades jobs, to their school peers and the larger community; and

 

WHEREAS, The RoboLancers are not solely focused on robotics; with a 100% graduation rate, the RoboLancers team members graduate and continue their studies at higher learning institutions including Temple University, Drexel University, Carnegie Mellon University, The University of Pittsburgh and many more; and

 

WHEREAS, The RoboLancers work ethic and dedication to robotics, their community and Central High School are respected and held in high esteem. The impact that the RoboLancers have made in the past year represents the bright future that each student has in store for them; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and recognize the Central High School Robotics Team, the RoboLancers, on qualifying for the FIRST World Championship by virtue of their second consecutive and fourth ever Chairman’s Award, the highest honor in FIRST robotics.

 

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to team representatives of the RoboLancers, as further evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
