Recognizing and honoring Samuel Staten, Jr. on his appointment as Vice President of Laborers’ International Union of North America.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Samuel Staten, Jr., born on September 9, 1952, is the proud son of the late Samuel Staten, Sr. Samuel Staten, Jr. is a native Philadelphian. He was educated in the Philadelphia School system and is a product of Germantown High School; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Staten, Jr. has dedicated his service to Laborers’ Local 332, rising through the ranks and now serves as the Local’s highest ranking officer. Samuel Staten, Jr. joined the Laborers’ Union Local 332 in 1972 and worked seven years in the field as a laborer. In 1979, Samuel Staten, Jr. became a Field Representative. In 1986, he became the Recording Secretary of the union. In 1988, he became the Secretary-Treasurer. In 1996, he was appointed as Assistant Business Manager. In 2000, he became President, which he served as until he became the Business Manager in May of 2008; and

 

WHEREAS, In addition to his dedicated work at Laborers’ Local 332, Samuel Staten, Jr. holds many leadership positions among various Philadelphia organizations. These positions include: Chairman of the Philadelphia Housing Authority Prepaid Legal Service, Legislative Member of the Family of the Dell East, Chairman of the Laborers’ Plasterer Tenders Health and Welfare Fund, Delegate and Vice President of the AFL-CIO, Delegate and Vice President of the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council, Executive Board Member of Laborers’ Local 332, Board Member of the African American Labor Leaders, Board Member of the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board,  Honorary Board Member of the Philadelphia Department of Recreation Boxing Program, Board Member of A. Phillip Randolph Institute, Board Member of Coalition Black Trade Union, Board Member of Philadelphia Community of Leaders, and Board Member of the Philadelphia African American Museum; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Staten, Jr. has devoted his career to making the City of Philadelphia a better place to work and live in.  He has a natural love and concern for his union members and their families, and a special interest in helping our youth and senior citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, On June 12, 2016, Samuel Staten, Jr. reached another milestone in his career, when he was appointed as the Vice President of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, which represents over 400 Local unions across the country, and has over 500,000 members; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes and honors Samuel Staten, Jr. on his appointment as Vice President of Laborers’ International Union of North America.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Samuel Staten, Jr., as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
