Title

Adding Grace H. Daniels Way to the street signs on the 800 block 46th Street between Parrish and Westminster in honor of Grace Daniels, a mother in the West Philadelphia Community and an advocate for helping others.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Grace Daniels was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a faithful friend to the community. She and her husband, Otis L. Daniels, moved to Philadelphia from Durham, NC and raised their family of nine in their home at 852 N. 46th Street; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Daniels was an active member at her church, Saint Thomas Episcopal Church at 52nd and Parrish Streets. Grace, her husband and all of her children were baptized and confirmed at St. Thomas; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Daniels was also active in her community. In 1947 she became interested in politics and was elected as a Democratic Committeewoman of the 44th Ward under the leadership of John B. Albany; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1967 she then became the chairperson of the 44th Ward under the leadership of the Honorable Robert N.C. Nix, Jr. In 1977-80 Ms. Daniels was elected to the Democrat State Committee and she held the position of Democratic Ward Leader until her passing in 1980; and

 

WHEREAS, Grace Daniels was a committed member of Louisa S. Rumford Chapter #15, order of the Eastern Star; and

 

WHEREAS, Grace Daniels loved helping her community. She loved politics and was loyal, dedicated and faithful to all the candidates she felt would be mindful of the needs of the constituents. If she believed in you she was willing to go the extra mile for you; and

 

WHEREAS, She helped many people get jobs, whether they were in her ward or not. She had a true heart for helping others and people came from near and far for her assistance, direction and guidance; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Philadelphia City Council, Hereby adds Grace H. Daniels Way to the street signs on the 800 block 46th Street between Parrish and Westminster in honor of Grace Daniels, a mother in the West Philadelphia Community and an advocate for helping others.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Grace Daniels as a sincere expression of the Philadelphia City Council’s gratitude and recognition.
