Honoring The Links, Inc. on the 70th Anniversary of its founding in Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The seed for The Links organization was planted at a meeting in Philadelphia on November 7, 1946, in which a group of women discussed starting a women’s organization focused on the needs and aspirations of women of African American descent; and

 

WHEREAS, Since that meeting, nearly 70 years ago to this day, The Links, Inc., has flourished into an international not-for-profit corporation with 12,000 members in 276 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas; and

 

WHEREAS, The Links, Inc. remains strongly committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of people of African ancestry; and

 

WHEREAS, Members of The Links believe that the name “Links” should not only signify a chain of friendship, but also a chain of purposeful service; and

 

WHEREAS, This commitment to purposeful service is why at any given time, Links around the globe can be found awarding scholarships and grants to students; donating clothing, furniture or food to the homeless or hungry; running health workshops for parents and children, adopting elementary schools or providing holiday gifts to homeless women veterans, among countless other charitable acts; and

 

WHEREAS, This past summer, Link Sisters gathered in the name of service and friendship for their 40th National Assembly in Las Vegas, Nevada, where they celebrated the achievements of the past seven decades and enriched themselves with events, sessions and workshops centered on the theme “Inspire, Connect, Engage”; and

 

WHEREAS, It is only fitting that an organization which has done so much to promote and advance sisterhood and service across the Diaspora be honored and recognized by the City where its roots run deepest; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does honor The Links, Inc. on the 70th Anniversary of its founding.

 

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to The Links, Inc., evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
