Honoring and Recognizing Lynne Honickman and the Honickman Foundation on their work to improve the lives of citizens across the City of Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Lynne Korman Honickman is founder and president of The Honickman Foundation, which partners for the future through art, education and community in concert with its affiliate, The Honickman Charitable Trust; and

 

WHEREAS, Formally trained as a writer and artist, Mrs. Honickman is an activist for the arts and for pressing social issues. Her core values are derived from her family and her Jewish heritage — a legacy that values family, hard work and civic responsibility; and

 

WHEREAS, A devoted wife and partner for over 55 years, as well as a mother and grandmother, Mrs. Honickman has managed to bring into balance the life of being a supportive spouse, with her passions, interests and values; and

 

WHEREAS,  In 1976 she established Regional Media Associates, an in-house advertising agency for the Honickman Bottling Group, where she served as president and creative director for fifteen years; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1989 Mrs. Honickman founded The Honickman Foundation, dedicated to the support of projects that promote spiritual growth, creativity, education and social change. The foundation partnered with Project HOME and Comcast over a decade ago to build The Honickman Learning Center Comcast Technology Labs in North Central Philadelphia. Currently, the center serves more than 375 children and 925 adults each year; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honickman Foundation has also established two national book prizes, one in poetry with the American Poetry Review and one in photography with the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Honickman has received countless recognitions and awards for her civic and philanthropic work throughout the City of Philadelphia including an honorary doctor of laws degree in 2002 from Chestnut Hill College; The 2005 G. Fred DiBona, Jr. Individual Leadership Award from the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia; The 2006 Take the Lead Award from the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania; The 2008 Judge Lois G. Forer Child Advocacy Award from the Support Center for Child Advocates; and The 2009 Humanitarian Award from Magee Rehabilitation; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Honickman was honored by The Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine as it 2015 Woman One honoree which recognizes outstanding women leaders in the Philadelphia community and raises scholarship funds for talented, underrepresented women medical students at Drexel University College of Medicine; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Honickman has served on numerous nonprofit boards including trustee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Friends of the Alfred Stieglitz Center, Project H.O.M.E., the Mayor's Task Force to End Homelessness Action Leadership Team, the advisory board of MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance), The American Poetry Review and the leadership committee for The Support Center for Child Advocates. She is the founder of Moms Against Guns which recently merged with CeasefirePA and now serves on CeasefirePA's board of directors; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mrs. Honickman has worked to improve the lives of her fellow citizens. Her contributions to the community transcend traditional giving and addresses the needs of vulnerable communities with wholehearted enthusiasm; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and recognizes Lynne Honickman and the Honickman Foundation on their work to improve the lives of citizens across the City of Philadelphia.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Lynn Honickman as evidence of the true and sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
