Recognizing the 8th District Sanitation Initiative on its efforts to find a solution to the chronic and long-term problem of trash dumping in the City of Philadelphia.
Body
WHEREAS, Illegal dumping has become an epidemic in Philadelphia's neighborhoods, diminishing the quality of life and livability of our City and creating environmental hazards in our air, storm water and groundwater; and
WHEREAS, According to data collected from Philly 311, Philadelphians place about 15,000 illegal dumping and 6,500 vacant lot cleanup service requests each year. Among the factors contributing to the problem are inadequate trash collection, construction and commercial dumping, lack of information on the City's sanitation convenience centers, and the reduction in trash receptacles citywide; and
WHEREAS, The 8th District Sanitation Initiative was created with the goal of developing and implementing programs and services to help achieve a "zero waste" City, including trash dumping prevention outreach, monitoring and reporting on trash conditions, and working with City agencies and neighborhood groups on trash policies and the development of best practices; and
WHEREAS, The 8th District Sanitation Initiative is comprised of longtime activists and experts in waste reduction, illegal dumping and neighborhood cleanup efforts in the 8th Council District and citywide including: Emaleigh Doley, Germantown United CDC; Anna Figueroa, Tabor Children's Services; Bill Durham, LaSalle University; Kelly O'Day, retired environmental engineer; Majeedah Rashid, Nicetown CDC; Maurice Sampson, Niche Recycling; Bill Simon, Temple University; Sylvia Simms, former member of the School Reform Commission; State Senator Sharif Street; and Joe Tucker, Esq., Tucker Law Group; and
WHEREAS, An additional goal of the 8th District Sanitation Initiative will be to increase awareness of the City's sanitation service centers as well as comprehensive community outreach on neighborhood clean-up efforts so that all residents can participate in helping to make our streets cleaner and safer; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA Hereby recognizes the 8th District Sanitation Initiative on its efforts to find a solution to the chronic and long-term problem of trash dumping in the City of Philadelphia.
