Recognizing and honoring the Philadelphia Flyers Wives for their service to the City of Philadelphia, and celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the inaugural Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival.

 

Body

WHEREAS, On February 1, 1977, the Flyers Wives organized the first annual Flyers Wives Carnival, which raised $85,167.35 for Hahnemann Hospital’s fledgling cancer institute. For the last 40 years, their annual Carnival has raised funds for Flyers Charities, which has contributed over $26 million to philanthropy; and

 

WHEREAS, Funds raised by the Flyers Wives Carnival have supported several non-profit organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region, including the Fox Chase Cancer Center, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Andrew Jackson School, Philabundance, and The Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2015 the Philadelphia Flyers Wives partnered with Fox Chase Cancer Center to support its Women’s Cancer Center, which provides multidisciplinary programs to support both the physical and emotional needs of women faced with a cancer diagnosis and treatment; and

 

WHEREAS, Flyers Wives directly supports Fox Chase Cancer Center’s mobile screening unit, which is the only mobile screening unit with state-of-the-art mammography technology in Philadelphia and provides potentially life-saving services to upwards of 3,000 women annually; and

 

WHEREAS, For the last 6 years, Flyers Wives have partnered with St. Christopher's Hospital and Michael’s Way Foundation in their Building Hope for Kids Project to remodel the homes of children and families who are fighting cancer in the City of Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, Flyers Wives have worked tirelessly to serve the City of Philadelphia throughout their 40 year history, and they remain an active force for community improvement to this day. The Flyers Wives’ dedication to their adopted home is truly laudable and the City is pleased to honor their many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the Council hereby recognizes and honors the Philadelphia Flyers Wives for their service to the City of Philadelphia, and celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the inaugural Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to  the Philadelphia Flyers Wives as further evidence of the sincere admiration and gratitude of this legislative body.
