Recognizing May 14, 2017 to May 21, 2017 as National Police week in Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week; and

 

WHEREAS, Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and

 

WHEREAS, National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America's law enforcement community. The principal organizers of National Police Week include the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the Fraternal Order of Police, and Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.); and

 

WHEREAS, There are more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States, with over 6,100 sworn officers in the Philadelphia Police Department; and

 

WHEREAS, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 observes National Police Week by sending members to the annual services in recognition of the ultimate sacrifices made by police officers across the country at The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and

 

WHEREAS, The City Council of Philadelphia has long respected and honored the work of the Philadelphia Police Department; now therefore be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA that the week of May14, 2017 to May 21, 2017 be recognized as National Police Week in Philadelphia; and be it

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, that engrossed copies of this resolution, as evidence of the sincere respect of this legislative body, be presented to the Philadelphia Police Department and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 in recognition of their great service and sacrifice for the City of Philadelphia.
