Honoring The Urban League of Philadelphia on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The Urban League of Philadelphia was founded in 1917 as The Armstrong Association and became known by its current name in 1953 when it affiliated with the National Urban League, the oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to achieve social and economic equality; and

 

WHEREAS, Over the past century, The Urban League of Philadelphia has become a leader and a voice in the Greater Philadelphia region when it comes to impacting the African American community, with a vision to be known as the leading source of empowering all people in Philadelphia and throughout the region through economic empowerment, advancement and achievement; and

 

WHEREAS, The Urban League is a non-profit, non-partisan, civil rights and community-based movement that provides direct services, research and policy advocacy to help individuals and communities reach their fullest potential; and

 

WHEREAS, The Urban League of Philadelphia is one of nearly 100 National Urban League affiliates who have together provided services to more than two million people; and

 

WHEREAS, Over the years, The Urban League of Philadelphia has developed five core programs that empower the community of Philadelphia: workforce development, youth education, housing counseling, entrepreneurship coaching, and leadership development; and

 

WHEREAS, The vision of the Urban League of Philadelphia is supported by “Connect 360”, a strategy that leverages the connections between individuals, corporations, community-based groups, civic organizations, small and emerging businesses and policy makers; and

 

WHEREAS, Since 1917, The Urban League of Philadelphia has helped tens of thousands of African Americans and others in the Philadelphia region improve their lives; and

 

WHEREAS, As the organization embarks on its next 100 years, the City of Philadelphia stands in support of The Urban League’s 21st Century goals, designed to widen the economic mainstream so that it reaches our most vulnerable citizens; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does honor The Urban League of Philadelphia on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary.

 

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to The Urban League of Philadelphia evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
