Recognizing and Honoring the Award-Winning Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® For Its Ongoing Commitment of Service to the  City of Philadelphia’s Community.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®,the first Greek-letter organization for African-American women, founded at Howard University on January 15, 1908, has grown from an initial group of sixteen founders to its current membership of over 290,000 members with a global strength of over 1,000 chapters; and

 

WHEREAS, The Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, was chartered ninety years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 10, 1926; and

 

WHEREAS, The North Atlantic Region is comprised of all undergraduate and graduate chapters located from Maine to Washington, DC; and

 

WHEREAS, From April 26-30, 2017, the Omega Omega Chapter was recognized at the 86th North Atlantic Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in Baltimore, Maryland, with six regional-level awards for contributions made and service rendered during the year 2016, including its excellence in providing service and adherence to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s international program targets, the “Chapter of the Year” Award (Large Chapter); its diligence in reclaiming inactive members of the sorority, the Ruth C. Easley Reactivation Award (Large Chapter); for the outstanding leadership qualities of the 28th Chapter President Lorina Marshall-Blake, the “Basileus of the Year” Award (Large Chapter); for the perseverance of the Chapter’s Connection Committee in stimulating political and social awareness, the Erma W. Barron “Making A Difference” Award; for its unwavering commitment to the mentoring of young adults, the Launching New Dimensions of Service ASCENDSM Award; and for the systematic and ongoing collection of food and clothing, and the implementation of programs related to fiscal responsibility, the Launching New Dimensions of Service “Family Strengthening” Award; and

 

WHEREAS, The Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, chartered on June 24, 1945 and represents one of three undergraduate chapters supervised by the Omega Omega Chapter; and

 

WHEREAS, The Gamma Epsilon Chapter, whose membership represents the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, LaSalle University, St. Joseph’s University, and Philadelphia University has been designated as the Philadelphia City Chapter; and

 

WHEREAS, The Gamma Epsilon Chapter was recognized at the 86th North Atlantic Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority with four regional-level awards, including the Undergraduate “Chapter of the Year” Award; “Basileus of the Year” Award, where second place was awarded to Taylor Allen, Chapter President; the Erma W. Barron “Making A Difference” Award; and the Launching New Dimensions of Service “Family Strengthening” Award; and

 

WHEREAS, The Delta Iota Chapter of Cheyney University, chartered on February 20, 1954, represents one of three undergraduate chapters supervised by the Omega Omega Chapter; and

 

WHEREAS, The Delta Iota Chapter was recognized at the 86th North Atlantic Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority as having attained Silver Status for its contributions to the Educational Advancement Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®; and

 

WHEREAS, The Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and its affiliated undergraduate chapters will continue to work diligently, provide service, reach goals, and fulfill requirements set forth by the international program of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby recognize and honor the award-winning Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® for its ongoing commitment of service to the City of Philadelphia’s community,

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Carol Parkinson-Hall, Chapter President of Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
