Congratulating Germantown’s Northwest Raiders for winning the 61st Annual Division I Varsity Pop Warner National Football Championship.

WHEREAS, on December 9, 2017 the Northwest Raiders won the 61st Annual Division I Varsity Pop Warner National Championship by defeating the Pompano Chiefs, 33-12; and
WHEREAS, The Pop Warner Super Bowl, a nationally televised game hosted at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, consists of 64 teams that play for national championships in two divisions and five age/weight ranges (Junior Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Junior Varsity, Varsity and Unlimited); and
WHEREAS, Under the guidance of Head Coach Syril Woodland the national title is the pinnacle of an excellent season for the team composed of students from Imhotep Institute Charter High School and Martin Luther King High School; and
WHEREAS, With their Pop Warner Super Bowl victory the Northwest Raiders earned their fourth national title in a row; and
WHEREAS, Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., founded in 1929, is a nonprofit organization that provides youth football and cheer and dance programs in 42 states across the country and is the only youth football organization that requires participants to maintain academic standards in order to participate; and
WHEREAS, The Northwest Raiders Athletic Association, based at the Lonnie Young Recreation Center, is one of the oldest youth sports organizations in Philadelphia, providing athletics and mentorship to the City’s youth since 1971; and
WHEREAS, The efforts of the dedicated volunteer coaches and staff have been vital to sustaining constructive youth activities to the at-risk demographic they serve, developing athletic and academic role models in the community, and bringing national exposure to youth football in Philadelphia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Congratulates Germantown’s Northwest Raiders for winning the 61st Annual Division I Varsity Pop Warner National Football Championship.
