Honoring, Recognizing and Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Pennsylvania Convention Center of Philadelphia, and the strong cultural and economic impacts it has had on our City and the region.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Constructed in 1931, the Philadelphia Civic Center was the precursor to the Pennsylvania Convention Center however, it became less viable as a center-piece for large gatherings of groups to meet at, losing most of its functions by the late 1960’s.

 

WHEREAS, In 1983 city planners identified 12th and Arch as a premier spot for development and construction of the new convention center, along with ease of access due to the numerous public transit options for visitors; and

 

WHEREAS, Over the next ten years, the Pennsylvania Legislature and The Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority planned and constructed the new convention center, officially beginning in 1991 and opening their doors in 1993.

 

WHEREAS, After opening underbudget and on time, the Pennsylvania Convention Center has grown to support over 1.1 million visitors annually, bringing in billions of dollars into the Philadelphia economy; and

 

WHERAS, The Pennsylvania Convention Center is dedicated to improving Philadelphia in several ways, including partnering with local shareholders and strategic partners to maximize business impacts, along with fostering a culture oriented towards service, delivering a positive experience for the consumer; and

 

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Convention Center brings in people from all over the country and the world, introducing them to Philadelphia and showing how the City could benefit their groups.

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Pennsylvania Convention Center of Philadelphia, and the strong cultural and economic impacts it has had on our City and the region.
