Recognizing and Celebrating The Philadelphia Heritage and PhilaMontco Branches of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

WHEREAS, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (“ASALH”) was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard University scholar and educator who made research and conservation of African-American history and culture his life's work. Dr. Woodson is considered to be the Father of Black History Month, a time set aside to consider the courageous struggles and achievements of African Americans through the exploration of our history; and
WHEREAS, ASALH is a non-profit organization, which promotes historical research and writing; publishes books on African-American life and history; promotes the study of African-American history; collects, interprets, and supports the preservation of historical manuscripts and materials related to African Americans. Locally, the ASALH branches that include Philadelphia Heritage and PhilaMontco, carry out these responsibilities through monthly meetings and creative programming designed to reach the local community and vicinity throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, The mission of ASALH is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community. ASALH has served as a clear point of entry for anyone interested in African American life and history since its founding in 1915. As Dr. Carter G. Woodson once profoundly stated, “As a tree without roots is dead, so is a person without the knowledge of their own history”; and
WHEREAS, Each year, ASALH presents several awards to recognize community leaders and those who make significant contributions to the preservation of African American history. On January 28, 2018, the PhilaMontco branch hosted the Annual Mayor’s and Governor’s Proclamations Ceremony at Arcadia University; and
WHEREAS, On Saturday, February 10, 2018, the Philadelphia branch recognized African Americans with their annual Black History Month Program. This year, the Program celebrated African Americans in Times of War including a special focus on the roles of African Americans in every American war; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and celebrate the Philadelphia Heritage and PhilaMontco branches of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the ASALH Philadelphia Heritage branch and the ASALH PhilaMontco branch as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
