Recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act and marking the month of April as Fair Housing Month in the City of Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, April 11, 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1968- the Fair Housing Act, which enunciates a national policy of Fair Housing without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sex, familial status, and handicap, and encourages fair housing opportunities for all citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, We recognize that where people live has a direct impact on the quality of their health, education, and access to economic opportunities; and

 

WHEREAS, Fair housing supports the development of racially and economically diverse communities; and

 

WHEREAS, Fair housing plays a critical role in fostering healthy people and neighborhoods and we acknowledge that where someone lives affects both their physical and mental wellbeing; and

 

WHEREAS, Fair housing has a role in creating and expanding educational opportunities as the presence of affordable, stable, housing can support holistic community development, including improved schools, tutoring, and strong extracurricular programs; and

 

WHEREAS, Housing plays an important role in low-income households’ ability to achieve and maintain the stability necessary to pursue their financial goals and escape poverty as the stability provided by affordable housing can help households secure and maintain employment, increase their savings, and increase independence; and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is dedicated to providing its private citizens, employees, public housing and nonprofit organizations with the knowledge and tools to recognize housing discrimination; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act and marks the month of April as Fair Housing Month in the City of Philadelphia.
