Also naming the 1300 block of South Broad Street as “Jimmy Tayoun Way”.

WHEREAS, A Philadelphia legend in the newspaper business, restaurant business, and politics, Jimmy Tayoun died suddenly on November 1, 2017 at the age of 87 outside his home at 1321 South Broad Street; and

 

WHEREAS, Jimmy Tayoun graduated from Temple University with a journalism degree.   He spent the first 19 years of his career in the newspaper business, including a turn as a sportswriter for the Philadelphia Daily News and for military publications while he served in Korea; and

 

WHEREAS, Proud of his Lebanese heritage, Jimmy and his brother Ed ran the Middle East rRestaurant in South Philadelphia and then Old City from 1958 to 1996.  It was a destination where many enjoyed good food and entertainment; and

 

WHEREAS, Jimmy Tayoun was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1969 and then served as a member of Philadelphia City Council until 1991; and

 

WHEREAS, Jimmy Tayoun returned to his journalism roots and launched his newspaper, The Public Record, in 1999, a weekly edition stuffed with ads from the politicians he had known for decades. In 2016, he sold his newspaper to City & State, a New York-based media company that was expanding operations to Philadelphia. He remained involved in the publication until his death; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the 1300 block of South Broad Street is also named “Jimmy Tayoun Way”.
