Congratulating the Penn State University Nittany Lions Men’s Basketball Team for their championship victory in the 2018 National Invitational Tournament.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State University Nittany Lions Men’s Basketball Team won its second National Invitational Tournament (NIT) championship at the famous Madison Square Garden on March 29, 2018, defeating championship finalist the University of Utah; and

 

WHEREAS, The Nittany Lions Men’s Basketball Team completed their successful season with a winning record of 26-13, including a Big Ten conference record of 9-9. Their undefeated tenure in the 2018 NIT consisted of wins against Philadelphia’s own Temple University, the University of Notre Dame, Marquette University, and Mississippi State University in addition to their victory over the University of Utah; and

 

WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association founded the NIT in 1938, making it one of the oldest consistently held college basketball tournaments in the nation. In 1940, the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Committee (MIBC) took administration over the tournament until it was purchased by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA); and

 

WHEREAS, The 2018 national championship team includes native Philadelphian players Julian Moore, Shep Garner, Lamar Stevens, Tony Carr, Nazeer Bostick, and Mike Watkins. Other members of the playing team are Deivis Zemgulis, Satchel Pierce, Jamari Wheeler, Taylor Nussbaum, John Harrar, Grant Hazle, Josh Reaves, and Trent Buttrick; and

 

WHEREAS, The 2018 national championship team is led by Head Coach Patrick Chambers with support from Associate Head Coach Keith Urgo, Assistant Coach Dwayne Anderson, Assistant Coach Jim Ferry, Director of Operations Ross Condon, Director of Player Development David Caporaletti, Director of On-Campus Recruiting Nicholas Colella, Associate Director of Athletic Training Services Jonathan Salazer, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Greg Miskinis; and

 

WHEREAS, Penn State’s second NIT victory is being celebrated by Nittany Lions everywhere. Head Coach Patrick Chambers captured the importance of this victory, stating “Penn State Basketball is here to stay. It’s not just a stepping stone, it’s a destination”; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby congratulate the Penn State University Nittany Lions Men’s Basketball Team for their championship victory in the 2018 National Invitational Tournament.
