Recognizing May 13, 2018 to May 20, 2018 as National Police Week in Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week; and
WHEREAS, Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others; and
WHEREAS, National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America's law enforcement community. The principal organizers of National Police Week include the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the Fraternal Order of Police, and Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.); and
WHEREAS, There are more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States, with over 6,300 sworn officers in the Philadelphia Police Department; and
WHEREAS, The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 observes National Police Week by sending members to the annual services in recognition and honor of the ultimate sacrifices made by police officers across the country at The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, The City Council of Philadelphia has long respected and honored the work of the Philadelphia Police Department; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA, That the week of May 13, 2018 to May 20, 2018 be recognized as National Police Week in Philadelphia.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That Engrossed copies of this resolution be presented to the Philadelphia Police Department and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 in recognition of their great service and sacrifice for the City of Philadelphia and as further evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
