WHEREAS, On Sunday, May 5, 2019, the Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation's 40th annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run will take place; and

WHEREAS, The Broad Street Run, sponsored by Independence Blue Cross since 1997, is the largest 10-mile road race in the United States, having drawn more than 40,000 competitors in prior years; and

WHEREAS, The Broad Street Run, which begins at Broad Street and Somerville Avenue and proceeds south toward the Philadelphia Navy Yard, was named one of the fastest 10-mile courses in the country by Runner's World, due to its straightness and gentle downhill incline; and

WHEREAS, In addition to the speed of the course, runners return to the Broad Street Run year after year to experience the rich and diverse collection of communities and landmarks along Broad Street, one of the City's busiest and most vibrant thoroughfares; and

WHEREAS, On race day, runners from across the country and around the world make their way down the course as thousands of excited spectators offer support and encouragement from the sidelines, in rain or shine; and

WHEREAS, Since 1982, runners have donated over $5 million to the American Cancer Society, and this year, runners can make a pledge to any of five designated race charities: the American Cancer Society, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Students Run Philly Style, Back on My Feet, and the American Association for Cancer Research; and

WHEREAS, It is fitting to recognize and celebrate the Broad Street Run and the many individuals and organizations who come together to make it a success, and who have made it a beloved Philadelphia tradition and a destination for runners across the globe; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does honor and celebrate the Blue Cross Broad Street Run on the occasion of its 40th Anniversary.
