Celebrating the creation of the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors Hockey Team, comprised of injured and disabled military veterans.

Body

WHEREAS, On February 21, 2019 the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia Flyers announced the launch of the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors Hockey Team; and

WHEREAS, The inaugural Philadelphia Flyers Warriors roster is comprised of 20 wounded veterans of the United States military who hail from the Greater Philadelphia Area; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Flyers Warriors are the 11th team to partner with USA Hockey’s Warrior Hockey Program. They will compete nationally against the Blackhawks Warriors Vets, Buffalo Warriors, Capital Beltway Warriors, Challenge Alaska Warrior, Dallas Warriors Hockey, Michigan Warriors, MN Disabled Warriors, Motor City (Detroit), Peoria Iron Sights, and Pittsburgh Warriors; and 

WHEREAS, The new team is supported by a joint donation by the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia Flyers as a means of cementing the legacy of the 2019 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series Game, in which the Flyers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins outdoors at Lincoln Financial Field; and

WHEREAS, This donation from the National Hockey League and the Flyers will cover costs like sticks, skates, pads, jerseys, and dedicated ice time in local rinks; and

WHEREAS, USA Hockey’s Warrior Hockey Program is a rapidly-growing opportunity for veterans and members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Former military members are required to have been discharged under honorable or general conditions. In several cases, the Warrior Hockey Program is an introduction to the game of hockey, with many trying it for therapeutic reasons; and  

WHEREAS, The City is grateful for the service and sacrifice of the members of the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors team as well as the continued community involvement and generosity of the Philadelphia Flyers, and hopes that the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors will quickly join the ranks of Philadelphia championship-winning teams; now, therefore, be it  

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby celebrates the creation of the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors Hockey Team, comprised of injured and disabled military veterans.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of the resolution be presented to the Philadelphia Flyers Warriors as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
