Recognizing Parthenia A. Moore for her lifetime of service to Philadelphia students and her leadership of the Philadelphia High School for Girls.

Body

WHEREAS, Philadelphia High School for Girls, a college preparatory for academically talented young women in Philadelphia, was founded in 1848 to “prepare teachers for the common schools of Philadelphia.” It was one of the first public high schools for girls in the United States. The school’s mission is to prepare students to treat others compassionately and lead lives of personal integrity at the university level, preparing them to be future leaders; and

WHEREAS, Philadelphia High School for Girls is known for its history of educating women who have contributed to the community, the state, and the nation in an array of fields including government, science, the arts, business and education. Notable alumni include attorney Gloria Allred, educator and historical figure Constance Clayton, actress and singer Jill Scott, and philanthropist Judith Rodin; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Parthenia A. Moore was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1971. Dr. Moore attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education while minoring in History and Physical Education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moore worked in the Philadelphia School System as a teacher for nineteen years, and served in a variety of leadership capacities. She decided to make administration the next step of her career, and earned her Master of Science Degree in Administration, Supervision, Curriculum and Instruction from Saint Joseph’s University; she also attained her Superintendent Certificates from SJU. She then went on to earn her doctorate and Reading Certifications from the University of Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moore was later appointed as Assistant Principal of Guion Bluford Elementary School, and Principal of George W. Clymer Elementary School. Her success in these positions led to her selection to as the Assistant Superintendent in the School District of Philadelphia, as well as to subsequent posts in Harrisburg and Bristol Township; and

WHEREAS, Although she has assumed many roles, Dr. Moore feels that her greatest accomplishment was assuming her current position as Principal of her Alma Mater, The Philadelphia High School for Girls, where she currently serves more than 1,100 students; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moore has been the recipient of countless honors, including a 2014 Lindback Award, Who’s Who of America’s Teacher Award, Teacher of the Year Award for the District of Philadelphia, and Best Principal Intern for Saint Joseph’s University. She was named Basic Education Grant Fellow for the Golden Age of Philadelphia. She has also served as a Commissioner on the Harrisburg Mayor’s Commission on Literacy, an Instructor of Education at the University of Pennsylvania and an Adjunct Professor at Cabrini College, Gywnedd Mercy College and LaSalle University. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and very proud member of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moore displays a genuine interest in supporting her students, who she affectionately calls her “daughters”.  Her hands-on, motherly approach to leadership has in turn earned her respect and love among her students. By this measure, Dr. Moore exceeded her role as she sought to show her students she believes in them and is personally interested in helping them be successful in school by listening to them, spending time with them, and advocating for their education; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Moore is an outstanding educational leader, impacting the lives of thousands of current and future leaders. While she is now retiring from her role as Principal, she will continue her legacy at the college level, while having more time to share her warmth with her family and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize Parthenia A. Moore for her lifetime of service to Philadelphia students and her leadership of the Philadelphia High School for Girls.
