Officially naming and designating the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center located at 280 Cobbs Creek Parkway, in the City of Philadelphia, as “Johnny Sample Recreation Center.”

WHEREAS, Johnny Sample was a sports and radio icon who was an inspiration to his community; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Sample was an American Football Defensive Back who played for the Baltimore Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins and the New York Jets; and
WHEREAS, After retiring from football, Johnny Sample became involved in tennis. He was ranked number one men’s player by the United States Tennis Association in the age 45 and over category for several years. During the 1980s and 1990s, he became a tennis official, a lineman and chair umpire at bigger events including the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open; and
WHEREAS, Johnny Sample was a resident of West Philadelphia and spent a significant amount of time in Cobbs Creek, bringing sports and positive interaction to the community. He also hosted a talk-radio show in Philadelphia; now, therefore
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA HEREBY ORDAINS:
SECTION 1. The Cobbs Creek Recreation Center located at 280 Cobbs Creek Parkway, in the City of Philadelphia is hereby officially named and designated as “Johnny Sample Recreation Center.”
SECTION 2. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall take effect upon enactment.
