Recognizing December 9, 2020 through December 13, 2020 as Army Week in the City of Philadelphia.

 

Body

WHEREAS, The United States Army has a long history in Philadelphia, beginning with the formation of the oldest regiment in Pennsylvania, the 111th Infantry Regiment, and the oldest continuously-serving military unit in Pennsylvania, the 103rd Engineer Battalion, also known as “The Dandy First,” both founded by Benjamin Franklin on November 21, 1747; and

 

WHEREAS, Since its official inception in the City of Philadelphia on June 14, 1775 as the Continental Army, the United States Army has developed leaders of character who have gone on to serve the Greater Philadelphia area during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and nearly every major conflict since; and

 

WHEREAS, The Army continues to be an enriching career path for citizens of the Greater Philadelphia area, with soldiers able to serve in 150 different career fields, including more than 50 specialties offered in healthcare alone. One hundred percent of these jobs have related civilian credentials, thereby promoting viable civilian careers beyond the military; and

 

WHEREAS, The United States Army and its 1 million soldiers of the Regular Army, the Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard, stand watch over the country, day and night, against all enemies. They are respected around the world for their bravery and vigor; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby declares December 9-13, 2020 as Army Week in this City. We commend the soldiers, civilians and family members of the United States Army for their service and sacrifice in the defense of the City of Philadelphia and the Nation. Philadelphia City Council extends its most sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to members of the United States Army, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
