Title

Recognizing and honoring Lynette Medley and her daughter, Nya McGlone, for their menstrual hub, The SPOT Period; and for the work they have done to provide menstrual products and ongoing support for those suffering from period poverty.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Period poverty encompasses inadequate access to menstrual and hygiene products, as well as lack of access to clean water and waste management systems. Period poverty affects women across the globe, forcing them to resort to socks, stuffed animals, and other makeshift menstrual products; and

 

WHEREAS, Lynette Medley and Nya McGlone faced period poverty themselves, experiencing firsthand the difficulties in reaching out for support; and

 

WHEREAS, No More Secrets: Mind Body Spirit Inc. was founded in 2012 by Lynette Medley as a platform to allow persons of all ages the freedom to embrace their true selves, and has now expanded to The SPOT Period, which is believed to be the first menstrual hub in the nation; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2017, Medley and McGlone began a menstrual product bank in Medley’s therapy office in Chestnut Hill, which expanded to a menstrual product delivery service to accommodate those without access to transportation; and

 

WHEREAS, Medley and McGlone were completing 80 deliveries per week before the COVID-19 pandemic, and 285 per week during the pandemic. They have observed the deep poverty that many of those they serve have been dealing with, as well as been emotionally touched by the gratitude received; and

 

WHEREAS, At the end of 2020, Medley and McGlone were able to raise $10,101 to open The SPOT Period, which continues to be entirely funded by community donations; and

 

WHEREAS, The SPOT Period provides free menstrual and hygiene products, educational resources and seminars, access to clean water and toiletries, a computer, room, first period kits, and a Breonna Taylor safe room to serve as a sanctuary for marginalized women; and

 

WHEREAS, The SPOT Period, located in Germantown, will be open from 10am to 6pm Monday and Friday, 12pm to 8pm Wednesday, and by appointment on Saturday, throughout the pandemic; and

 

WHEREAS, Medley and McGlone are committed to ending period poverty and have changed the lives of many through their perseverance and selflessness; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes and honors Lynette Medley and her daughter, Nya McGlone, for their menstrual hub, The SPOT Period; and for the work they have done to provide menstrual products and ongoing support for those suffering from period poverty.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy be presented to Lynette Medley and Nya McGlone, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
