Recognizing Tarik Khan’s incredible leadership and contributions to the health and well-being of Philadelphians and extending appreciation and admiration for his efforts to vaccinate Philadelphia residents against COVID-19.
Body
WHEREAS, Tarik Khan was born and raised in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Tarik’s mother, Patricia, is a nurse whose commitment to service, equity and engagement inspired Tarik to pursue a career in nursing; and
WHEREAS, Tarik is a graduate of Central High School, Davidson College, Roxborough Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and La Salle University; and
WHEREAS, Tarik Khan has over 15 years of nursing experience. He began practicing as a nurse practitioner in 2011; and
WHEREAS, Tarik is a PhD candidate in nursing at the New Courtland Center for Transitions and Health at the University of Pennsylvania, where he focuses on patients with developmental disabilities and also on health policy advocacy. His current research focuses on improving health care outcomes for family caregivers of older adults with cognitive impairment; and
WHEREAS, Tarik is currently the President of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, which represents more than 250,000 nurses statewide. Tarik is committed to engaging and inspiring nurses to recognize their power; and
WHEREAS, Tarik founded a non-profit, Enabling Minds, to improve the lives of persons with intellectual and other developmental disabilities in underserved regions throughout the world by promoting acceptance and inclusion; and
WHEREAS, Tarik is nationally certified as a family nurse practitioner at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Nicetown and has won several awards for his advocacy, including The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Influencers of Healthcare Award, Billy Penn’s Who’s Next: Community Leader Award, AANP’s “State Award for Excellence,” and Sigma Theta Tau’s “Kappa Delta Leadership Award”; and
WHEREAS, Tarik is actively involved in Philadelphia’s Medical Relief Corps with his mother (who is universally adored and admired by everyone who meets her), where they have worked together to vaccinate thousands of people; and
WHEREAS, Tarik has been a leader in efforts to vaccinate Philadelphians against COVID-19, particularly Philadelphians with accessibility challenges; and
WHEREAS, When Tarik recognized the lack of resources for homebound and disabled Philadelphians to safely obtain the COVID-19 vaccine, he personally took vaccines to patients in their homes; therefore be it
Resolved, that Philadelphia City Council, Recognizes Tarik Khan’s incredible leadership and contributions to the health and well-being of Philadelphians, and to supporting and giving voice to critical issues that impact nurses and the nursing profession.
Further Resolved, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Tarik Khan as evidence of Philadelphia City Council’s sincere appreciation and admiration for his efforts to vaccinate Philadelphia residents against COVID-19.
