Title

Also naming the 2900 block of South Sydenham Street “Theodore Scairato, Sr Way” to honor the life and legacy Theodore Scairato, Sr. for serving the South Philadelphia Community for over 70 years.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Theodore Scairato, Sr. is a lifelong South Philadelphia resident whose life has brought much happiness and fulfillment to the 2900 block of S. Sydenham Street; and

 

WHEREAS, During his childhood, Mr. Scairato was an avid musician, and he played the saxophone for many years. He went on to become a member of the local Philadelphia musician's organization, and he crossed paths with many famous musicians, including Frank Sinatra; and

 

WHEREAS, In his early adulthood, Mr. Scairato volunteered for the United States Marine Corps, and he served our country during the Korean War. After he returned from his military service, Theodore became involved in local politics and community service; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Scairato was extremely active in his community and was a member of nine volunteer associations. He was the president of the Holy Name and Korean War Veterans societies, as well as director of the Sports Complex Special Services District IV, and

officer of the Broad Street Civic Association; and

 

WHEREAS, For over 65 years, he attended countless meetings, assisted his parish church and its parishioners with various needs, and surveyed the community to identify ways that he can improve the quality of life. Mr. Scairato was bound to be involved in any tree planting, charity drive, clean-up effort, memorial service, or community improvement project in South Philadelphia; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Scairato was integral in the All Wars Memorial located on 15th and Moyamensing Ave. From raising money for little league teams to ensuring that the playgrounds are suitable for neighborhood children, Theodore was continually making a positive impact on his community; and

 

WHERAS, Mr. Scairato was also active in his local politics where he was a committeeman for the Democratic Party and provided incredible grassroots support to Democratic candidates; and

 

WHEREAS, In addition to his community work, Mr. Scairato was a man of faith. He was the first ever lector for St Richard’s Church when they started the lector program. He was integral in the founding of St. Richard’s School (now named St. Pio’s School), and he served as the President of St. Richard’s Holy Name Society as well as the Home and School Association; and

 

WHEREAS, Theodore was not only a stalwart in the community, but at home as well. He left behind five children, 9 grandchildren, and now 7 great grandchildren, all of whom are indicators of how great a man Mr. Scairato was; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Scairato was always relied upon by members of his community to help solve their problems. Anything that his community needed, especially his neighbors on the 2900 block of South Sydenham Street, he helped accomplish. He will truly be missed, but his legacy will live forever; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Also names the 2900 block of South Sydenham street “Theodore Scairato, Sr. Way” to honor the life and legacy Theodore Scairato, Sr. for serving the South Philadelphia Community for over 70 years.

 

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Theodore Scairato, Sr. as evidence of the admiration and respect of this body.
