Honoring and congratulating Philadelphia native Kristen Welker for being named the next moderator of the legendary Sunday morning show Meet the Press.

WHEREAS, Meet the Press is a Sunday morning public affairs news broadcast steeped in historic significance. The show is the longest-running show on American television, having just celebrated its 75th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, Kristen Welker is a Philadelphia native, hailing from the Fairmount neighborhood of the city. She attended Germantown Friends High School; and
WHEREAS, Welker was a reporter and weekend anchor at NBC10 Philadelphia for five years; and
WHEREAS, Kristen Welker has enjoyed a storied career in journalism, having spent time with affiliates of ABC in Rhode Island and California and NBC10 here in Philadelphia. She was named NBC White House correspondent in 2011, and since then has shared roles at MSNBC and NBC. She was previously the host of Weekend Today; and
WHEREAS, Starting in September, Welker will be the 13th moderator of Meet the Press, and is the first woman of color to sit at the helm of the show. Welker joins journalism legends such as Martha Rountree, Tim Russert, David Gregory and Chuck Todd, among others, as moderator of the historic program; and
WHEREAS, Welker will continue the show’s tradition of dedication to transparency and truthfulness, reporting on the issues that matter most to Americans; now, therfore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby congratulate and honor Philadelphia native Kristen Welker for being named the next moderator of the legendary Sunday morning show Meet the Press.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an engrossed copy be presented to the family of Kristen Welker further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
