Authorizing the Committee on Education to hold hearings to examine recent high profile violent incidents between parents, faculty and students at middle and high schools.

 

Body

WHEREAS, Recent prominent incidents at Philadelphia high schools and middle schools have raised concerns over safety within schools across the City. With incidents from West Philadelphia to Center City to the Northeast, this is an issue of citywide concern; and,

 

WHEREAS, Incidents like these put students and faculty in unsafe situations and undermine confidence in our educational institutions to keep students safe in a healthy learning environment; and,

 

WHEREAS, These incidents, which often go viral on social media, show concerning confrontations and violence between students, parents, and school staff. These incidents have a concerning potential to escalate; and,

 

WHEREAS, Incidents between school staff, especially between climate officers and coaches with parents, set a poor example for our city’s young people, who must have positive leaders and role models to look up to especially in our education systems; now, therefore, be it,

 

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby authorize the Committee on Education to hold hearings to examine recent high profile violent incidents between parents, faculty and students at middle and high schools.
